From losing a job to the death of a close friend, we all experience stressors and troubles in life. However, for some of us, healing from traumatic experiences may not be natural. The traumatic event may have its repercussions for years.
What Is Trauma?
Trauma is a deeply distressing and disturbing experience that does not fall in the normal range of human experiences.
It is an experience where the victim’s life or physical integrity is in danger. They may also witness this event happening to somebody else.
Examples of such events include combat violence, childhood abuse, physical assault and so on.
Understanding PTSD
According to the American Psychological Association, PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is defined as: an anxiety problem that develops in some people after extremely traumatic events such as combat, crime, an accident or natural disaster”.
Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks and nightmares related to the event, hyper vigilance, emotional numbing, and irritability and anger among others. For some, these symptoms may develop shortly after the horrific event has occurred; whereas in others, the onset may be delayed for months or even years.
How Hypnosis Can Help
When it comes to PTSD treatment, the goal of hypnotherapy is to unlock emotions by helping the client revisit the trauma and experience it in a different light.
According to a research published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, hypnosis can prove to be quite helpful in treating PTSD symptoms. Some of the hypnotherapeutic techniques involve coupling traumatic memories with positive restructuring of these memories, helping the client acknowledge helplessness during the event, and teaching self-hypnosis techniques to patients.
According to a blog by Wellness Institute, there are 3 elements that are important in the release of past traumas for deep healing to occur:
Somatic Release
Release of the painful emotions is the first step towards recovery. It helps relieve shock.
Containment
This is the part where the trained hypnotist induces a hypnotic trance. A safe, resourceful state is created where the client can return to when being overwhelmed. The therapist starts the process of ego strengthening and provides a sense of empowerment to the client.
Corrective Experience
Here, the hypnotherapist encourages the client to express feelings that he/she was not able to express at the time. This allows them to extricate blame from themselves and give some meaning to the traumatic experience.
