Toxic Fear and What it Does To Us: A Brief Review

Among the many evolutionary emotional responses we are equipped with, fear is one of them.  The purpose of fear essentially is to keep us safe. Fear helps us survive. It allows us to both read and avoid potentially risky situations and helps us react in ways that are sometimes life saving.

Sometimes, situations which are akin to the original trauma we faced occur in our present day lives triggering our fears. This however can be both good and bad for reasons we will get into!

Over the course of this blog, we’re going to discuss toxic fear and what it does to us as individuals.

Fear and Toxic Fear

The first thing we need to do here is understand the difference between your normal healthy fear and toxic fear. Where normal healthy fear serves to keep us safe, toxic fear can be quite crippling. It takes away from our lives and reduces the capacity at which we function. Let us look at how a little closer!

Toxic Fear Holds Us Down

It doesn’t matter whether it is a new and unfamiliar experience, a job or piece of work that needs doing or a relationship, toxic fear holds us down. We fear that we might fail, mess up or simply not meet the mark. Regardless of the underlying logic, sans any tangible explanation, the unreasonable feelings of dread associated with starting something new is due to toxic fear. The result? You don’t live as fully as you could because you’re constantly afraid of things not going your way!

Toxic Fear Keeps Us From Learning

Nothing closes up the human mind like fear. You have a history of wars and conflicts to testify to this fact. Toxic unchecked fear tends to put us in a psycho-emotional state which is completely non-conducive to learning and evolving. Fear of the new keeps us stuck in the old and keeps us stagnant.

Toxic Fear Makes Us Edgy

You might thing people full of fear would look timid and scared but you could not be more wrong. Many of us learn to hide our fear behind aggression and edginess. There might not be a problem with a little edginess, but with toxic fear, things can escalate rather quickly. The result? Disproportionate reactions of anger as well as constantly being on edge!

Conclusion

As you can see, the problem with toxic fear is that it gets in the way of about everything. The other problem is that sometimes such fear is too deep within us to address with regular therapy. At such times, methods like hypnosis can be a highly effective way to treat your toxic fear.
