When we’re younger, low self-esteem is often wrongly dismissed as shyness. However, as we grow older, we begin to realize that shyness is merely a symptom of low self-esteem; poor self-esteem is a much bigger problem.
Self-esteem refers to our opinions of ourselves, our abilities, our strengths and what we are capable of achieving in life.
Those suffering from poor self-esteem, have very little faith in their abilities; they lack the confidence to step out of their comfort-zone and are constantly filled with self-doubt. This low sense of worth prevents them from taking risks in their lives and reaching their true potential.
To counter the effects of poor self esteem, many turn to psychotherapy for help. But psychotherapy isn’t always easy for people who are so self-critical and often times they struggle to silence their inner-voice that continues to spew negativity.
This is where hypnosis helps.
Causes of low self-esteem
Low self-esteem stems from your childhood; those who tackle it early on, do better in life than those who choose to ignore it. As a child we receive positive and negative messages from those around us; unfortunately the negative ones stick.
Our adolescent years can either make us break us. There are many people who do grow out of it and make a conscious effort to improve their self-esteem and there are others who succumb to the negativity.
How hypnosis helps
Using hypnosis to treat self-esteem works differently than psychotherapy. In psychotherapy, our conscious mind creates obstacles that can overpower the advice given by therapists; we make excuses for our behavior instead of accepting advice.
In a state of hypnosis, we’re much more open to suggestibility. The process is relaxing and involves accessing our subconscious mind while keeping our conscious mind engaged. The goal of treating poor self-esteem via hypnosis is to uncover and challenge the negative thoughts that are embedded in our minds.
Hypnotists ask clients a various questions which they answer more openly in a state of hypnosis. With a few sessions of hypnosis, a good hypnotists should be able to identify the central issues that have negatively impacted the client’s opinions of their self. Through suggestions, hypnotists encourage clients to alter their thinking and replace negative thoughts with more positive ones. After sometime, thinking positively comes more easily to the client. Their opinions of themselves change, they have more confidence in their abilities and have a more positive outlook in life.
