“Having a low opinion of yourself isn’t modesty, it’s self-destruction” – Bobby Sommer
Limitless self-confidence isn’t something you’re born with. If someone seems to have incredible self-confidence, chances are they’ve worked their whole life to build it.
Having low self-esteem and self-confidence can have disastrous consequences. It can create stress, anxiety, and an increased likelihood of depression. It can cause an individual to develop negative habits. In fact, statistics have revealed that 75% of girls with low self-esteem engage in negative activities, such as bullying, drinking, smoking, and disordered eating.
The challenging and highly competitive world of business and life in general, can sometimes deflate your self-confidence, which is why it’s important to learn how to build it back up. Here are3 effective strategies to boost self-confidence.
Visualize Yourself as You Want to Be
Visualization is the technique of imagining a version of yourself that you’re proud of, in your own mind. People who struggle with low-confidence generally have a poor perception of themselves that is often inaccurate. Practice visualizing a great version of yourself achieving all your goals.
Affirm Yourself
The way we behave is often in accordance with how we perceive ourselves. The key to making a lasting change is to change how you view yourself.
Affirmations are uplifting, positive statements that we say to ourselves. Typically, these are most effective when said out loud—so you can hear yourself. If we constantly tell ourselves something, we eventually start believing it. For instance, if there’s something you dislike about your appearance, practice saying something you like about yourself the next time you stand in front of your mirror.
To get your brain to accept your affirmations more quickly, phrase your positive statements as questions, such as “Why am I so good looking?” instead of “I am good looking”. You see, our brain is hardwired to seek answers to questions, without analyzing the validity of the question.
Do One Thing You’re Scared of Everyday
If you’re insecure, remember that the rest of the world is as well. You should neither overestimate the competition, nor underestimate yourself.
The most effective way of overcoming fear is to tackle it head-on. By doing something that scares you every day, you’ll gain confidence from the experience.
