Strengthening Your Relationships by Building Trust through These 3 Tips

Trust is undoubtedly one of the most important things in any relationship. It’s even more crucial in romantic relationships where you and your partner partake in mutual decisions that affect you both.

So, how can you ensure your relationship has the right level of trust and faith? Here are a few ideas.

Make Promises You Can Keep

It’s easy to make promises and utter assurances. Following through with them? Not so much.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re insincere when you promise your partner something or claim to be by their side through thick and thin. However, if you repeatedly fail to follow through with what you’ve said, they’ll eventually stop believing you. We often make grand promises with the best of intentions, but are unable to implement them. This can weaken our loved one’s trust us over time and they may stop counting on what we’ve said.

The solution? Say what you truly mean and show your sincerity by actually sticking to what you’ve said. This applies to even the smallest and mist basic things. For instance, if you told your partner that you’ll pick up groceries after work, then stop by the store instead of delaying the task for later. Similarly, make promises you can keep and don’t be unrealistic about your own capabilities. An example is you promising not to be late for dinner and then making an effort to leave work on time so that you can fulfill that promise.

Don’t Tone Down Your Feelings

The whole idea of having a trusting relationship is to be able to talk about your thoughts and emotions openly, without feeling the need to hide them from your partner. It also means being able to communicate how you’re feeling without resorting to verbally attacking them, yelling, or breaking down in tears in every conversation. The latter will prevent your partner from being open and honest with you because they fear how you’ll react to what they’re saying. While it’s okay to be upset, you need to figure out a way to be able to communicate with your partner without hiding your true feelings.

If either or both of you pretend everything’s fine and continue toning down your emotions too frequently, then you’re depriving your relationship of the emotional intimacy it needs. By being respectful and considerate of each other’s viewpoints and learning ways to address challenging emotions, you can establish trust and effective communication.

Always Be Honest

This is a no-brainer. You can’t have a trusting relationship without honesty and transparency. This means you and your partner need to be open and honest with each other every step of the way, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Sometimes the smallest of lies can threaten the foundations of your relationship. You may also avoid being honest with your partner to save them from potential pain, but by keeping things from them or being elusive will only hurt them later.
