Light at the End of the Tunnel: Dealing with Suicidal Thoughts

Whatever circumstances you’ve been through or how you’re feeling right now is unique to you—what’s not unique is having suicidal thoughts. The idea of taking your own life can feel frightening and overwhelming but know this: you’re not alone in this. A lot of people have felt the same way you are right now and have managed to find a way out.

According to the World Health Organization, depression affects more than 300 million people globally. It can make it difficult to seek help and often leads to suicidal thoughts. In this blog, we’ll share a few tips to help you escape the cycle of negativity.

Distant Yourself from Danger

The first step is to find a place of safety. Suicidal thoughts often hit the hardest when you’re in a potentially dangerous situation or area such as a balcony, while driving a car, waiting for a train, or near weapons and harmful objects.

Minimize the risk of acting on these thoughts by physically removing yourself from the area and reach out to a friend or family member.

Reach Out

If slow breathing, moving to a safe position, and muscle relaxations don’t reduce the intensity of suicidal thoughts, then it’s time to reach out for professional help. Even if the thoughts have passed away, it’s a good practice to get in touch with a friend or family member whom you can trust.

Although the instinct may be to isolate yourself from everyone else, try to fight the impulse and surround yourself with people who you care about. If you can’t get in touch with anyone, don’t hesitate to call 911 or seek professional help.

Hypnotherapy

According to research, hypnosis has proven to be an effective method in relieving mental anguish and overcoming feelings of hopelessness. An experienced therapist guides a person to relive joyful memories and helps them achieve a better frame of mind. A person finds themselves in a relaxed environment and moves on with therapy at their own pace.

Often, the cause of depression is a traumatic experience or memory that keeps playing over and over again. Other times, it can be due to difficult circumstances such as financial problems. Hypnotherapists aren’t able to turn your fortunes around, but what they can do is help you distance yourself from thoughts that make you anxious and fearful.
