Why Open Emotional Expression is Extremely Important

Only a few decades ago, there was a general culture in most of the world that encouraged emotional suppression. It was considered good, polite and classy to keep things to yourself. People found holding down feelings to be a desired trait, often linked with strength in men and patience in women (you can also see how the same was tied into gender roles).

Due to this, many of us seem to have lost touch with how to express feelings in an appropriate and healthy manner. The thing with feelings and emotions though, is that you can’t sit on them forever and like steam in a pressure cooker, if not let out the right way, they are bound to erupt!

Why Open Emotional Expression is Important

Open emotional expression and sharing is extremely important. An article in the online magazine The Good Men Project goes over this but discusses the problem specifically with regard to men.

We’re going to talk about the importance of emotional expression regardless of gender or age over the course of this blog.

Feelings and Emotions Need to Be Processed

Feelings and emotions all carry certain energy with them. When we go through things but are unable to adequately communicate and process what emotions those experiences invoked in us, those unprocessed emotions fester within. Emotional expression allows us to take what is within, dissect it, look at it and put it away in a manner that does not prove toxic to us in the long term.

Unprocessed Feelings Manifest in Undesirable Behaviors

Oftentimes people’s undesirable traits and behaviors are a manifestation of unprocessed material that lies within. The behaviors these manifest in could be anything from aggression and anxiety to depression, overeating and other obsessive compulsive behaviors.

Sometimes these emotions are buried so deep that it takes treatment techniques such as hypnosis to connect with and cure such negative emotions and energies. That being said, it always helps to process such things on the spot before they find roots within us, hence another benefit of open emotional expression!

Unprocessed Emotions can Manifest Physically

Have you ever heard of the word ‘psycho-somatic’? This refers to something that is of body and mind. At times, deep rooted unprocessed and unexpressed emotions look for a way out. When we continue to sit on them either because we are conditioned to be unexpressive or simply never learned how to express our emotions appropriately our emotions find other outlets. To be more specific, we feel them in our bodies. Many people suffer from chronic pains such as migraines and aches in the bones and muscles. Psycho somatic problems can also manifest in issues with the stomach and digestive tract.

Again, if you are suffering from some kind of psycho somatic pains that cannot be medically explained, you might need to work on your deep rooted unresolved emotions. Further, in such cases, specialized techniques might be required to help you access and work with the needful.

Living a more Fulfilling Life

Healthy emotional expression is the key to living a complete and fulfilling life. The more we sit on and hold down, the more discomfort and distress we create for ourselves within. If you have a phobia for expressing your feelings, techniques like hypnosis are a great way to overcome the issue!

Regardless of how you do it, just remember, open emotional expression is extremely important for your overall wellness!
