Trouble Expressing Feelings? You Just Need to Connect with Your Inner Self

If you go back in time to a few decades ago, emotional suppression was something that was lauded and encouraged. Being good at hiding emotions was considered the mark of a strong man and a patient woman. Keeping things to yourself was seen as polite and classy. And when you look at it retrospectively, it’s easy to see how it got tied into gender roles.

Thankfully, times have now changed, and the global culture has evolved. Mental health issues are finally being given the attention they deserve. But unfortunately, some cultural norms from the old days have prevailed. And it’s because of these cultural norms that many of us have become used to suppressing our feelings.

However, humans are designed by nature to be social creatures. We have an inherent need to communicate, to talk, to express our feelings either verbally or through gesture. Depriving yourself from this basic need is bound to have negative consequences.

Why Expressing Your Emotions is Important

The emotions we feel have certain energy within them. When we go through stuff in life but are unable to properly process or communicate the emotions those experiences invoke in us, the unprocessed emotions fester within us. Emotions that are not expressed can turn inward and become destructive.

Moreover, suppressing emotions for a long time can make us lose touch with our true identity – or even prevent us from forming one at all. It’s emotional expression that enables us to take what is within, dissect it, process it, and put it away in a manner that does not prove toxic to us in the long term.

Connect With Your Inner self

Individuals who struggle to express their emotions often develop self-esteem issues. After years of neglecting their emotions, they just feel that they aren’t important anymore. However, the more we suppress and disregard our emotions, the more distress and discomfort we create for ourselves. Therefore, in order to live a complete and fulfilling life, it’s important to connect with our emotions and let them out.
