Being expressive and being able to genuinely express your emotions are two different things.
Take for instance, telling someone about a business plan you have formulated.
You might be able to do this impeccably without flaw. On the flipside, try telling your partner, parent or close friend how you feel about something of emotional importance. Some of you might be perfectly comfortable with this. Others – not so much!
Fear Of Expressing Emotions
If you find yourself unable to express one or more emotion, this could be due to a fear of the same. You might struggle with expressing anger. Maybe sadness is the feeling you can’t seem to adequately communicate. The list goes on. In any case, if you do have a fear of expressing emotions, this could be rooted in early experience.
Where Does it Come From
We develop fears through experience. Fear of hot objects is developed if you’re burned. A fear of water might be triggered due to a childhood experience where you almost drowned and so on. A fear of expressing emotions has much to do with conditioning.
If at a young age, we are taught and conditioned to view certain emotions as acceptable and others as unacceptable, these messages sit in our psyches over a period of time. They then manifest into perceptions, behaviors and in this case fears.
Being jeered at publically at school as a child for crying might result in a fear of expressing sadness. Being physically reprimanded by a parent for losing your temper at a young age might result in a fear of expressing anger altogether. This is putting it really simply. In actuality, there are hundreds of reasons why a fear of expressing certain emotions may set in.
What does one do about It?
Again, there are ways to overcome such fears and your personal inability to express certain emotions. Therapy may often be helpful. Hypnosis is often used as a powerful, efficient and reliable tool when working with overcoming deep rooted fears of emotional expression.
